What will a support worker do for me?
The role of the support worker is to:
- Listen to you in a non-judgemental way,
- Guide you in managing what is important to you and
- Assist you in getting the support that you want.
Listen to you in a non-judgemental way:
This means that we are here to listen to everything you have to say, not just the things you feel you should say! You don't have to talk about anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, but it can help to tell someone who isn't involved in your everyday life. Getting a worry or concern off you chest might be all that you need.
Guide you in managing what is important to you:
From listening to you, the support worker can get a full and honest understanding of your situation. From here, he/she can help you to manage what is important to you. Sometimes it's difficult to know what you need or want, and how to get it. We respect that it is your life, and these are your decisions, but a support worker can help you to think about all of your options so that you can do what's best for you.
Assist you in getting the suport that you want:
When you are talking with the support worker, you may realise that you would like further support. If/when you decide this, the support worker can help you to access the supports that you need, wherever they may be.
