Support your LGBTQ+ family and friends this christmas

Friday, 13 December 2024

The holiday season is a time for connection and celebration, but it can also present unique challenges for LGBTQ+ individuals.

As friends and family, we have the opportunity to create a space where everyone feels valued, respected, and loved. By practicing allyship—through small yet meaningful actions—we can make the holidays more inclusive and supportive for all. Here are some thoughtful ways to ensure your gatherings are warm and welcoming this season.

Make space for authenticity

Let your loved ones know they’re welcome to bring their full selves to holiday gatherings. Whether through inclusive language, using correct pronouns, or simply showing openness, small gestures go a long way.

Listen without judgment

Sometimes, the best support is simply listening. Give space for them to share how they’re feeling without jumping to conclusions or offering solutions. Let them know you’re there to listen.

Stand up for them

If you notice dismissive comments or outdated language from others, take a moment to kindly and respectfully address it. Showing support by standing up can make LGBTQ+ friends and family feel valued and protected.

Be mindful of language

Language is powerful. A simple “How’s your partner?” rather than assuming specifics can create an inclusive environment. Making an effort to be inclusive shows that you’re considerate of their experiences.

Offer continued support

Support doesn’t end when the holiday season does. Let your LGBTQ+ friends and family know you’re there for them all year round. A message or check-in after gatherings can reassure them of your care and allyship.
