Understanding how best to help young people who are in distress is at the heart of what Jigsaw does.

Jigsaw has always worked to evaluate the impact of services so we can best help young people in Ireland.

As part of that mission, today we publish the organisation’s first Research Bulletin. The aim of the bulletin is to make research in the area of youth mental health more accessible.

We hope to build greater understanding of both the youth mental health crisis that is impacting Irish young people and highlight the possible solutions.

In this bulletin, we distil one of the largest pieces of research into the experiences of young people receiving therapy in Ireland.

The study recently published in the Journal of Early Intervention in Psychiatry examined the experiences of 4,565 young people who used Jigsaw’s services between 2017 and 2019.

It found:

  • Two thirds of young people showed improvements from engaging in therapy.
  • Waiting more than 60 days reduced improvement rates by over 10% for 12 to 16-year-olds.
  • Those experiencing the most distress saw the greatest rate of improvement.
  • More therapy sessions didn’t always lead to increased rates of improvement.
