A barefoot journey for youth mental health
A barefoot journey for youth mental health
When Eamonn Keaveney set off from Istanbul in March 2025, he had an ambitious goal: to walk all the way home to Claremorris, Co Mayo barefoot every step of the way.
Almost a year later, Eamonn has not only completed that extraordinary journey, travelling through nine countries and covering 6,805 kilometres on foot, but has now officially been recognised by Guinness World Records for the longest barefoot walk. His distance is almost twice the previous record of 3,409 kilometres.
But for Eamonn, this challenge was about much more than setting a world record.
Along the way, he has raised more than €21,000 for Jigsaw and Friends of the Earth Ireland, helping to support causes that are close to his heart.
Eamonn chose to support Jigsaw because of his belief in the importance of mental health support for young people. Speaking about his fundraising, he said: “Mental health is really important to me” and highlighted Jigsaw’s work providing a concrete service for young people.
From the roads of Turkey to his home county of Mayo, Eamonn’s journey has been one of incredible determination, resilience and generosity. And while reaching the finish line is an achievement in itself, the money and awareness he has raised for youth mental health make this remarkable challenge even more meaningful.
We’re hugely grateful to Eamonn and everyone who supported his journey. What an incredible way to go the extra mile for young people’s mental health.
