Ask Jigsaw: I have anxiety

Thursday, 11 March 2021

I’ve had panic attacks since I was about 11 years old and my mom takes no notice and I have lots of anxiety going about my daily life I’m almost positive I have anxiety but because of how anxious I am I’m afraid to bring it up with my mom.

Hi Justwondering,

Anxiety is a natural emotion that we all experience from time to time. While it can feel uncomfortable, it’s also useful in alerting us to danger. Although we can’t get rid of anxiety completely, we can learn ways to manage it.

What does a panic attack feel like?

The sensations of a panic attack can be intense. A panic attack can cause physical sensations such as shortness of breath or a pounding heart as well sending our thoughts racing.

Relaxation exercises can help us deal with these physical sensations. Everyone experiences the anxiety response to varying degrees, and it can be useful to remind yourself that while the sensation isn’t nice, that it’s only anxiety and it won’t harm you.

Getting support

If the anxiety we experience starts to negatively impact our day to day lives, then it might be time to get some support with it.

A good first step is to ask for help from a trusted adult in your life. I know you’re worried about bringing it your mum, but you deserve to get some support with things. Some young people we chat to find it easier to write a letter or text to let their parents know what is going on for them. Let them know how you feel, and if you can, what you think might help or what you would like from them.

Wishing you well,

Hazel
