Facilities Officer

A typical day for me is ...

Busy, my role is extremely diverse. With fifteen locations from the North of Ireland to the south, there are always new challenges on a weekly basis.

My role is to ensure the buildings are fully compliant with Health and Safety in every Jigsaw location. Staff also need to have the relevant training and equipment to do their work on a daily basis.

Working with so many external contractors, I ensure Jigsaw is receiving value for money with the services we receive. I see that contractors are meeting their service level agreements too.

My experience before coming to Jigsaw

I worked in the community non-profit sector. I had over 9 years’ experience in a supervisory managerial position, including five years running my own Property Maintenance Company.

My work involved assisting long term unemployed people get back into employment through training and personal progression plans.

I helped develop a Care & Repair programme, a free maintenance service for the elderly. This became a vital service for elderly people’s lives in Dublin and was eventually rolled out nationwide. The work was 50/50 office-based and meeting with clients for the service. With Jigsaw, this mixture of office-based work and travelling to various Jigsaw locations suited the way I preformed best as an employee.

I took some time to upskill and set my goal to be working in facilities within a twelve-month period. Thankfully I achieved my goal and haven’t looked back since I started with Jigsaw.

What I wondered about before I started in Jigsaw

I had previously been in the non-profit sector, working with disadvantaged adults to upskill and assist back into employment. I always found it rewarding that the work I was doing had a positive impact on people’s lives.

I felt I had achieved all I could in that role though. So I decided to return to college to study facilities management.

When this job was advertised online, it seemed to be an excellent progression for my career. I knew the work Jigsaw does in early intervention for young people’s mental health. It meant, that if successful with the interview, I would continue doing work that has a positive impact on people’s lives.

What makes Jigsaw different?

Though the work that I did in the past supported people, it was target-driven. In Jigsaw, every individual sector works together to ensure young people are receiving the best kind of service. This means a welcoming hub that steps away from a clinical type-setting.

In my last job, I found each department was siloed.

As a Facilities Officer ...

I take great pride in the work I do and enjoy learning from the people around me. I have an excellent working relationship with all my colleagues and line manager.

After a coffee and catch up with the finance director, he asked me: “how are you settling into your role?” I replied: “for the first time in a long time I’m going home each evening with a smile on my face”.

A typical day for me is

My week has considerable interaction with colleagues and professionals, inside and outside the organisation. There are no two days the same which is the great benefit of working in Jigsaw.

Due to lockdown, we have a lot of Zoom calls to keep in regular contact. We can see our colleagues on-line, which assists the communication process.

In my role, I travel quite regularly which is another great benefit of my particular job. This lets me meet colleagues in person, a very advantageous part of my role.

My experience before coming to Jigsaw

I worked in a range of property-related roles in Ireland and the UK I was in the UK when I saw the advertisement for a Property and Facilities Manager at Jigsaw.

The role and the criteria fitted exactly what I was looking for and my previous experience matched the criteria set out in the ad. I realised I could be an integral part of assisting the organisation to grow. We now have four new Hubs opened over the past 12 months.

What I wondered about before I started in Jigsaw

I initially had very limited information on Jigsaw. I wanted to know the size of the organisation, the goals, the culture, and the future objectives. As part of my research, I read all the annual reports to get information on the organisation and see how it had developed over the years.

What are the advantages of working with Jigsaw?

The diversity of the work and the fact I liaise with over 200 people on a daily basis are very big advantages.

We have professionals in Finance and I.T. which are crucial to me in my day-to-day job. This lets me ensure all hubs are run efficiently and achieve the maximum benefits for my colleagues and our clients.

More benefits are the flexibility and ability to put forward new ways of completing tasks so that we can be as efficient as possible.
